A French story

The Himalaya model was born from a discussion between Fred Lip, a mountain enthusiast, and his friend Lionel Terray, a high mountain guide. Maurice Herzog, a friend of Fred Lip, also contributed greatly to the success of this watch. Maurice Herzog was the first mountaineer to climb Annapurna. Advertisements from 1959 stated that it had been chosen by nine out of ten of the "Greats" of mountaineering for its astonishing resistance to the elements and shocks.

In 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit of Annapurna at 8091 meters. For the first time in human history, men conquered a peak above 8000 meters, equipped with LIP Himalaya watches specially designed for this French expedition.

Five years later, the Himalaya triumphed again during the first ascent of Makalu in 1955, the fifth highest peak in the world at 8485 meters, on the wrists of Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy. These legendary feats forged the reputation of the Himalaya collection, which has become one of LIP's emblematic models since 1954.
